The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
The 284 Winchester was introduced in 1963 in Winchester's Model 88 lever-action rifle. Decades hhead of its time, it is actually one of the first "short, fat" cartridges with a rebated rim and a larger diameter case. The intent was to produce "270 Winchester-like" velocity in a cartridge that can be housed in short actions, and although the 284 Winchester was never popular it comes pretty close: The remaining factory load pushes a 150-grain bullet at 2860 feet per second. Winchester has been the only producer of ammunition, but several bolt-action rifles have been chambered to 284 Winchester. It is actually a good cartridge that doesn't deserve to be as overlooked as it has been. —
