The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
The 356 Winchester was introduced along with the 307 Winchester in 1983 in a beefed-up version of the Winchester Model 1894, the intent to increase velocity and thus versatility in the 1894 platform. The 356 Winchester is based on a semi-rimmed version of the 308 Winchester case, and thus is very similar in performance to the rimless 358 Winchester--except that downrange ballistics are hampered by the necessity to use flat or blunt-nosed bullets in tubular magazines. Though never popular, it is an effective cartridge for game up to elk and moose at short to medium range. No current rifles are chambered to 356 Winchester, and its remaining Winchester factory load features a 200-grain bullet at 246- feet per second. —
