The 5.56mm Nato cartridge was primarily designed for
military use in rifle such as M-16's and AR-15's. Shooters should be aware of the difference between
.223 Remington and 5.56mm Nato ammunition. Although the physical
dimensions of the cartridge case are the same and it is possible to fire either
cartridge in the same gun, there is a deference in the design pressure, chamber
and throat of the 2 different chambering. It is safe to fire .223 Rem in
any 5.56mm Nato gun but you can run in to trouble shooting 5.56mm Nato
ammunition in guns designed and chambered for .223 Rem. The main
difference is that the 5.56mm is loaded to higher pressure (More powder) and
guns chambered for 5.56mm have a longer throat which allows the bullet to travel
farther out of the case before it engages the rifling. This little
difference helps keep the pressure down. The same cartridge fired in a .223 Rem
could build up higher pressure in that chamber then the gun was designed for.
Guns chambered for .223 Rem usually have tighter tolerances and generally more
accurate. Guns chambered in 5.56mm generally have looser tolerances with
longer throats which generally means less accurate but more reliable for
military use.Generally the standard military 5.56mm
Nato M193 cartridge will fire a 55 grain bullet from a 20" barrel at 3,250 FPS
while the civilian .223 Rem will average 3.000 FPS with the same 55 Grain
bullet. Also special primers with thicker cups have been designed us used
in 5.56mm Nato ammunition to prevent the primers from flattening out when being
fired. Although many hand loaders try to reach 5.56mm with hand loaded
ammunition, it is difficult to reach the same performance with the commercial
powders available. The powder used in most military 5.56mm ammunition is
WC844 which some times can be found on the surplus market. If you intend
to reload 5.56mm ammunition, it is recommended that you use small rifle magnum
primers or primers expressly designed for 5.56mm Nato, now commonly available.
